Bio

Hasmig Vartanian was born in Haifa, Israel of Armenian descent and grew up in Beirut, Lebanon. Her family immigrated to the United States where they lived in Philadelphia, PA. and she attended public schools, then moved to Racine, Wisconsin where she completed high school in 1964. After graduation she lived a rootless existence traveling and working all around America during the 60's and early 70's with the only constant being an interest in art. In 1973 she began studies in art at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee where she earned her bachelors in fiber art in 1977 and an MFA degree in painting from Washington State University (Pullman,WA)in1980. After graduation she moved briefly to Houston,Texas and then to Louisiana. She curently lives and works in her studio in Covington,LA and is adjunct instructor in drawing at Southeastern Louisiana University in Hammond, LA.

ARTIST STATEMENT:

I use the processes of construction and destruction in my art so that the final work is like an archaeological site showing the stages of creation in layers. The process of creation is central to the art's existence as a person's experiences and history is to their own. My art is a song of experience and survival rather than one of innocence but is beautiful to me nonetheless.
